Can I use my VIN to find a box?
Yes. When you add a machine to My Garage, you can enter its 17-character VIN, and we fill in the year, make and model for you. You still choose the rack yourself, because the VIN doesn’t record which rack is fitted. A VIN is never required: you can find your box by make and model.
How to use it
- Sign in. The VIN lookup is in My Garage, so it needs an account; signing in takes an email link or code.
- Choose “Add a machine” and open “Have your VIN? We can fill this in”.
- Enter the 17 characters and press “Fill in”. Spaces and dashes don’t matter.
- Check what we read, choose the version if the model has more than one, and pick your rack.
Where to find the VIN
It’s stamped on the frame and printed in your registration papers. A VIN has 17 letters and digits and never contains the letters I, O or Q, so they can’t be confused with 1 and 0.
What the result means
- Year, make and model filled in: pick the version if asked, then the rack.
- Only the year and make: the VIN record doesn’t include the model, so choose it from the list.
- The make isn’t in our catalog: we don’t have boxes for that brand.
- The VIN can’t be read: check the 17 characters, or choose your machine from the lists.
Why the rack is still your choice
A VIN describes the machine as it left the factory: maker, model, year, engine. It says nothing about the rack, and some models were sold with different racks. Boxes are made for a specific rack, so this one step stays with you.
What happens to your VIN
We send it to the vehicle database of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (vPIC) to look up the year, make and model. We don’t store or log the VIN. What we keep is the machine you save: make, model, year and rack.
