Is the box waterproof?

It’s sealed against the weather you ride in. The lid closes on a rubber gasket, and the locks or latches press it down, which keeps rain, snow, mud and dust out of the box. Tesseract doesn’t publish a rating for being under water, so don’t treat the box as submersible.

How the seal works

A rubber seal runs around the edge of the lid. When you close the lid and turn the keyed locks or snap the rubber latches, the lid presses evenly on the seal. The box itself is rotomoulded from high-density polyethylene.

What it keeps out

  • Rain
  • Snow and slush
  • Mud and spray thrown up by the wheels
  • Dust on dry trails

Where to be careful

  • Deep water: on river crossings deep enough to reach the box, put phones, documents and electronics in a dry bag inside it.
  • Washing: keep the lid closed, and don’t aim a pressure washer straight at the edge of the lid.
  • A dirty seal: grit or a strap trapped under the lid stops it from closing evenly. Wipe the seal now and then and check that nothing is caught when you close it.

If water gets in

First check that the seal is clean, sits evenly all the way round and isn’t cut, and that the lid is fully closed. If the seal or the lid is faulty, the 2-year warranty covers it: email [email protected] with your order number and photos.
